SAAM 2018

SAAM 2018

Nearly 1 in 5 women in the United States have experienced rape or attempted rape some time in their lives, and 1 in 67 American men have experienced rape or attempted rape.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and the goal is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. This year, SAAM is celebrating its 17th anniversary with the theme “Embrace Your Voice” to inform individuals on how they can use their words to promote safety, respect, and equality to stop sexual violence before it happens. Individuals can embrace their voices to show support for survivors, stand up to victim blaming, shut down rape jokes,
correct harmful misconceptions, promote everyday consent, and practice healthy communications with children.

SAAM serves as a time to be intentional and effective in spreading messages that are positive and liberating to survivors. It increases support to survivors, empowers survivors, and gets our communities involved and mobilized into action by making them aware of the issues surrounding sexual assault.

Peace River Center’s Victim Services Rape Recovery Program provides FREE hospital advocacy, legal advocacy, prison advocacy, support groups, educational groups, information and referrals, survivor-focused counseling, and more. The 24 –hour sexual assault helpline is 863.413.2707. Educate yourself and help inform others by downloading the “Understanding Sexual Violence” sheet.

Donor Spotlight: Ansley Martin

Peace River Center is fortunate to have a strong base of incredibly generous donors. We’d like to introduce you to one of those volunteers, Ansley Martin:

In April, Ansley was selected as the recipient of Publix’s Mr. George Community Service Award. This award recognizes associates who demonstrate charitable community involvement through time spent volunteering and harnessing a passion for giving back to their community. The award allows the recipient to select a nonprofit organization to receive a financial award.

Ansley’s Involvement

Ansley explains why she selected Peace River Center as the recipient and how she became involved: “My family has always supported Peace River Center. However, I was personally moved by Margaret Parry, former Chief Development Officer, whose passion for her work inspired me to get involved. Margaret asked me to become a member of the Full Moon Howl Committee. I was so impressed with how that committee works tirelessly throughout the year to ensure they are creating awareness and raising funds for Peace River Center. I joined the committee and have been a passionate volunteer and donor since. Peace River Center is serving a great need in the community by offering services to individuals who suffer from mental illness, are victims of sexual assault and much more. I am proud to support the mission and look forward to continuing to serve Peace River Center.”
