Shelter Renovations
Creating a more welcoming, warm environment
Built in 1994, Peace River Center’s Lakeland Domestic Violence Shelter is currently undergoing renovations to modernize it and make it a more welcoming environment for families and individuals escaping abuse. The Lakeland Shelter houses up to 30 individuals depending on family size and individual’s needs.
Modernizing Bathrooms
The first portion of the renovation project focused on the Shelter’s five bathrooms. This improved not only functionality of the bathtubs, but also greatly improved the aesthetics. Now survivors and their children can truly enjoy their self-care and daily hygiene routines.
Upgrading Bedrooms and Living Space
The second piece of the project involved updating the bedrooms and shared living areas. Old flooring was replaced with durable tile. Colors were selected to promote a calm but warm, healing environment. The brick walls received modern finishes to create a more welcoming look and feel.
Staff offices, where survivors complete paperwork upon entrance into the program, have also been updated with the new and modern finishes.
Additional Upgrades
Peace River Center’s future plans for the Lakeland Domestic Violence Shelter include site and safety features including new paved parking and secure gate/entryway systems; kitchen modifications to double the space and create cold and dry storage areas; and relocating the laundry room, incorporating it into a new area that also includes a climate-controlled pet kennel.
Donations Matched Dollar-for-Dollar
We currently have a matching grant thanks to the George Jenkins Foundation, Inc. so any donation you make up will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $160,000) to help us complete the remaining updates to the high-volume Domestic Violence Shelter. Consider making a donation today to support a welcoming, healing environment for survivors and their children.

These renovations were made possible thanks to funding from George Jenkins’ Foundation, Inc., including a $160,000 matching grant; county funding, and private donations.
The next phase of the project will be underway soon and include a new climate-controlled kennel area and laundry room. Following that we will raise funds to renovation the kitchen and dining room areas.
