Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
What is Parent Child Interaction Therapy?
PCIT is a short-term, specialized behavior management program designed for families with young children experiencing behavioral and/or emotional difficulties. PCIT teaches caregivers to manage their child’s behaviors, while focusing on increasing their positive behaviors. A PCIT therapist works with the child and caregiver together to improve overall behavior and reduce parenting stress.
How It Works

1. Live, real-time coaching is a distinctive feature of PCCIT.

2. The therapist observes the caregiver and child interacting and provides live coaching in the PCIT skills.

3. Caregivers and therapists work together to manage challenging child behaviors.
Who Can Benefit from PCIT?
Children ages 2-7 who display any or all of the following:
- Relational problems with the parent or caregiver
- Refuses adult requests or is defiant
- Easily loses temper
- Purposefully antagonizes others
- Destroys property
- Frequently fighting or showing aggression towards others
- Has difficulty staying seated
- Has difficulty playing quietly
- Has difficulty taking turns
