Mental illnesses can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, religion, or income. Unfortunately, because of misunderstanding, negative attitudes, shame, and fear of discrimination, a lot of people are still afraid to talk about their mental illness. That’s why it’s so important for us to raise awareness and Make It OK.

Importance of Awareness

People with a mental illness often wait an average of 10 years to seek treatment. Even though mental illness is common–one in five individuals in the U.S. experience a mental illness every year–and is a treatable medical condition, the stigma surrounding it still prevents many from seeking help. By breaking down that stigma, people with mental illnesses will feel safe to share their challenges and recovery journey. Raising awareness and eliminating the mental health and mental illness stigma will make it easier for individuals and families right here in our community to ask for help in finding treatment and resources.

Make It OK Campaign

Did you know mental illnesses are as common as silver cars and brown eyes? Yet the stigma prevents many people from seeking help. Make It OK is a community campaign to reduce stigma by starting conversations and increasing understanding about mental illness. The Make It OK campaign, made possible by HealthPartners, Inc. is designed to help everyone in our community learn, talk, and share. You play an important role in improving our nation’s mental health crisis. Check out our Make It OK page for more resources or to book your organization’s Make It OK presentation.

Why should I raise awareness?

Oftentimes individuals wait an average of 10 years to seek treatment for mental illness, a treatable medical condition. Some families right here in our community have lost loved ones due to undiagnosed mental illness and severe depression. We want to make sure everyone knows they are not alone and help is available.

  • Connect individuals and families to essential resources to improve their mental health, behavioral health, and overall well-being
  • The more we talk about mental health and mental illness, the more likely people are to feel comfortable sharing or seeking services. You never know when your openness and encouragement could help save a life.
  • Mental health conditions and mental illnesses are very common so you more than likely know someone impacted by one. In the U.S. every year one in five people experience a mental health challenge; you play a vital role in connecting others to resources so they can live a happy, fulfilling life.
